From Maryann Jones:
Here is a make-ahead idea for breakfast: Instead of standing there frying French toast a few pieces at a time, simply make your favorite French Toast custard the night before. Place the slices of bread in a buttered casserole dish. Add the custard. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, uncover and bake in a 375 oven until puffed and golden. Takes about 35 - 40 minutes. Good idea to let it come to room temperature for about an hour before you bake. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with berries and maple syrup.
(Another tip: add 2 TBSP of Gran Marnier to the French Toast custard. It is yummy.)
The custard: for four eggs I add a cup of milk and a scant cup of 1/2 and 1/2, vanilla, a pinch of salt, and 2 TBS sugar. Adjust depending on your taste and how many people you are feeding.
